Fun and Funky Eco-friendly Lighting Trends

Here are some interesting lighting fixtures with shades that are made of organic, recyclable, or bio-degradable materials from around the world.

Ango’s silk cocoon lighting fixtures are organic in form and feel. The Thai firm taps into the country’s silk industry and cleverly re-purposes the silk cocoons for making lamp shades. Shown is the floor lamp. Also are available are different styles of ceiling, wall and table fixtures in natural, black and red cocoons.

Jordy Fu from the UK uses intricate paper cuts to create her unique designs. The 3-dimensional shades are of recycled paper treated with non-flammable spray. You can promote sustainability and avoid landfills with this product in one fell swoop!

The Japanese cedar shade is bent into the shape of a Ninja star. This design from Kozai dramatically highlights the interplay of light and shadow in fixtures made from warm natural materials.

The hip lighting fixture from Japanese award winning design firm Nosigner is composed of mung bean starch vermicelli artfully draped over a lamp. So in this case, you can claim to have your lighting and eat it too! On disposal, the vermicelli is fully biodegradable, providing a uniquely earth friendly product.

From UK’s Innermost comes this gathered synthetic felt shade hung over an acrylic dome. The chandelier, available in 3 sizes, is vaguely reminiscent of a lacy, oversized jelly fish.

Canadian firm Molo’s series of fun and dynamic fixtures can be morphed into any of the shapes shown. The shade is made of a lightweight non-woven polyethylene that is 100% recyclable. The material diffuses light like paper, but is flame spread rated, tear, UV, and water resistant. These attributes, coupled with CFL and LED lamping options, make them ideal for indoor/outdoor use!

Thanks for the feedback. The company also has fixtures from mulberry tree bark and rattan. Awesome textures and very organic!

Sounds interesting. Who makes the lamp shade? So the lamp shade itself is lit, in addition to the light bulb?
